2,500 tonnes of capacity, a 162-metre main boom, and it went to work on offshore wind jackets almost immediately after it was commissioned.
Liebherr Mobile Cranes Korea Ltd. delivered an LR 12500-1.0 crawler crane to Hanchang Heavy Equipment, one of South Korea's major heavy-lift providers. This is a purpose-built machine for offshore wind, petrochemical, and industrial construction work — the jobs where the pieces stopped being truckable a long time ago.
Everybody looks at the 2,500-tonne number first. Fair enough. But the two lines further down the sheet are the ones that decide whether this machine makes money.
Redundant engines. Two power units instead of one means a single failure does not automatically shut the job down. On a crawler this size, a lost day is not a lost day — it is a lost week of remobilization and a very unhappy schedule.
3.5-metre transport width. A crane you cannot move is a monument. Keeping the bulk of the components inside a standard transport envelope is what lets this thing chase work across borders instead of living on one site forever.
Shortly after delivery, the crane was deployed at SK Ocean Plant's offshore wind farm, handling jacket substructures for turbine foundations. Those are the steel legs that carry everything above the waterline, and they are exactly the kind of load this class of machine exists to move.
A Hanchang representative noted that "the Liebherr crane is ideally suited to demanding large-scale projects," pointing at technical support and spare parts availability as part of the decision. Nobody buys a 2,500-tonne crawler on spec sheet alone — you buy the support behind it.
The LR 12500-1.0 slots between the LR 11350 and the LR 13000 in Liebherr's crawler range. That gap was worth filling: there is a whole band of offshore wind and petrochemical work that is too heavy for the smaller machine and does not justify the largest one.
